Groundwater Remediation
Owner: Precision Twist Drill
Location: Crystal Lake, Illinois
The Owner manufactures drill bits from blank rod
stock. The metal rods are first heat treated to improve strength
and hardness characteristics, then made into drill bits. In the
process they previously used trichloroethylene (TCE) in the vapor
de-greaser. Some of the spent TCE was mixed with waste coolant
oil in a concrete storage tank. The underground tank leaked, contaminating
the soil and groundwater at the site. Under a separate contract
with the Owner, Gannett Fleming, Inc. investigated the
site to delineate the extent of the contamination and then prepared
a conceptual approach to the remediation based on their investigation.
Gannett Fleming then pilot tested the concept and designed the full scale
system consisting of air sparging, vapor extraction and air-stripping
pumped contaminated groundwater. The air sparging system includes
a 75 hp rotary screw air compressor and 26 air injection wells;
the vapor extraction system includes a 30 hp rotary lobe blower,
13 horizontal wells and 11 vertical wells; and the groundwater
treatment system includes a 150 gpm air-stripper and one well with
a 10 hp submersible pump. All of the equipment is housed in a 30'
X 36' pre-engineered metal building. GFPDC provided construction/
installation services for the project. Start-up testing was conducted
upon completion of the construction/installation phase of the project.
